The Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead has not taken a position on the pending legislation in the U.S. Congress. We are in the process of analyzing and reviewing the language, to determine if it will accomplish our healthcare reform priorities: availability, affordability and Medicare payment reform to address regional disparities.

We have long supported the idea of allowing organizations to come together in purchasing pools to decrease insurance rates, as well as increasing competition to allow for additional choice in the healthcare insurance marketplace. North Dakota is unfairly compensated in the Medicare reimbursement schedule, and we support legislative action to correct that disparity.

We, as an organization, are affiliated with the US Chamber, as well as the State Chambers of Commerce in North Dakota and Minnesota, and appreciate the benefits afforded to our community and region by those organizations. As an independent organization, the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead develops our own legislative agenda and lobbies for our members on priority issues.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead have a strong commitment to providing quality healthcare for their employees. Unfortunately, the costs have become increasingly prohibitive, and have forced members to shift costs for coverage to employees or reduce coverage availability. We are committed to health care reform to benefit the membership of the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead, our community and region.

I am deeply saddened by the TV ads sponsored by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce attacking national health care reform. They are inaccurate, they attempt to instill fear in the general public, and they do so out of selfish motives. The chamber of commerce should be ashamed that it is the most outspoken opponent of health care for those who desperately need it. If I see that a business in the area is a member, I will boycott it, and I will call on others to do so as well.
